Raise your hand if you thought Kazuki Tomono would finish fifth at the World Championships this year. It’s ok, I’ll wait ….

In a competition where 3rd after the short fell to 14th and 4th after the short fell to 19th, Tomono went from 11th to 5th.

Crazy results aside, it was even tough to imagine Tomono finishing in the top 10 after the week of inconsistent practices he had in Milano. But he sure proved that practice doesn’t necessarily correlate with performance, skating the programs of his life and helping Japan keep three spots for next year’s Worlds.

This, from a guy who only got a Grand Prix spot last season as a last-minute replacement and continued training after taking fourth at Japan Nationals to get called up for the Worlds spot after Yuzuru Hanyu withdrew. Great things lie ahead.
